New project aims at suicide prevention
(2007-12-10)
(WOUB) - A new life and death project is taking shape in Athens, Hocking and Vinton counties.
The Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board is forming a coalition to help prevent suicides, which take the lives of more than 30,000 Americans each year.
Bill Dunlap is the board's deputy director, and he says teenagers are especially vulnerable.
The Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services effort aims to prevent suicides through four goals.
First, inform the public about the increasing suicide rate; then educate people on depression as its primary cause; and change the public attitude toward suicide as a stigma.
They also plan to help people recognize the signs of suicidal behavior.
The program got a state grant for getting started.
