NCAA tourney benefits Athens economy
(2007-12-07)
(WOUB) - The NCAA Division One volleyball tournament hosted at Ohio University this past weekend brought in nearly 300 grand for the Athens business community.

Although Ohio University was eliminated in the first round, local entrepreneurs still enjoyed some success.

The visitors bureau estimates the tournament brought in $283,000 in money spent on lodging, meals, entertainment and shopping.

The bureau also reports that a total of 686 hotel rooms in Athens were reserved for teams, administration, family members and fans of all four teams.

According to an OU news release, business owners say the tournament's profits came as a big bonus during a time when the community really needed it.
