Rail trail project moves ahead
(2007-11-28)
(WOUB) - What used to be a railroad that ran from Marietta to Cincinnati is now the Moonville Rail Trail in Athens and Vinton counties.

The 16 mile corridor runs through the Zaleski State Forest, including the old mining town of Moonville.

The driving force behind the project is Neil Shaw, the president of a local non-profit group that's been able to open part of the trail for hikers, bikers and horse-riders.

After years of struggle, the Moonville Rail Trail Association was able to get a state grant and purchase the railroad property so the trail could be developed.

The effort continues with help from, among others, Lenny Eliason and the other Athens County Commissioners.

Shaw hopes to eventually link the Moonville Rail Trail with the Hockhocking Adena Bike Path which extends from Athens to Nelsonville.
