Congress works to improve rural Head Start
(2007-11-26)
(WOUB) - Congressman Zack Space's plan to expand and strengthen rural Head Start programs has passed the House and Senate.

The Southeast Ohio democrat's proposals are included in the Head Start re-authorization bill...which President Bush is expected to sign.

Head Start provides child development, educational, and other services to low income children.

Space's initiative helps address many of the challenges rural areas face in recruiting and retaining teachers, performing outreach to eligible participants, and involving parents in their programs.

Space's amendment calls on Head Start administrators to develop models of professional development for staff serving populations in rural communities and remove barriers to parent involvement and home visiting services.

In 2006, Ohio had more than 38,000 Head Start students.
