Underground fire at Wayne National Forest
(2007-11-15)
Underground coal fire
(WOUB) - An underground coal fire has shut down a five acre section of the Wayne National Forest in Hocking County!

Forest service officials say the closed-off area is near the community of Gore - close to the Perry County line.

The one acre fire could create unstable holes which could cave in.

Officials believe the mostly underground fire has been burning since early October, when a landowner reported smelling smoke.

Then the fire was confirmed on October 29 when a Wayne National Forest firefighter located a fire burning in a remnant coal pile.

Firefighters have contained the surface fire, but are not sure how to put out the underground fire.

The forest service has hired a contractor to figure out how to do that.
