Past, present coal miners sought for registry
(2007-11-12)
(WOUB) - Mining roots run deep in southeast Ohio.

Many people are descendants of or have relatives who are, or have been, coal miners.

To pay tribute to them, a group called Little Cities of Black Diamonds Council is putting together an electronic registry of miners who worked in Athens, Hocking, Perry, and Morgan counties.

Cheryl Blosser, manager for the council, says that while most of the key players from the mining industry are well known, it's also important to remember the workers who risked their lives down in the mine.

Collecting the names of miners, though, is shaping up as a monumental task.

There are hundreds of thousands who worked in the area but Blosser says they're hoping to get as many names as they can.

Blosser says a big help are family members who have been extremly enthusiastic about the registry.

Organizers hope to have the registry online next year.
