New OU poll on education, security
(2007-11-09)
(WOUB) - Ohioans weighed in on topics ranging from the importance of higher education to illegal immigration in a recent survey conducted by Ohio University's Scripps Survey Research Center.

When asked about higher education, 62 percent said they find it very important

However, only 33 percent find it affordable for most state residents and only 26 percent feel the state is providing adequate funding.

In regards to elementary and secondary education, 68 percent find it very important...but only 47 percent would support sales or state income tax increases to fund it.

On the topic of illegal immigration, 79 percent find it a problem for the nation, but only 65 percent find it a problem for Ohio.

And while 77 percent of Ohio respondents like the idea of imposing fines against companies who hire illegal immigrants, only 44 percent like the idea of constructing a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Also, half of respondents think the U.S. has been successful in fighting national security problems.

Just a third feel more secure than they did a year ago.
