Zuni Indian fetishes
(2007-11-06)
(WOUB) - Many American Indians believe fetishes holds magical powers.

These objects are said to protect the owner.

Zuni Indian craftsmen and women make fetishes that are works of art...and at Ohio University's Kennedy Museum of Art, many are on display right now.

Sandra Sleight Brennan is director of the Kennedy.

The "Art of the Zuni" exhibition at the museum also includes stone, shell and inlay silverwork.

Sleight-Brennan says museum officials had some help from O-U students in preparing the exhibit.

"Gallery 66: Selling the Southwest" is also at the Kennedy.

This exhibit tracks the culture of tourism and trade along U-S Route 66 when the Kennedy's Southwest Native American Collection was assembled.
