More money for mentors
(2007-11-05)
(WOUB) - Students at three Athens County high schools are getting the chance to be positive role models to sixth graders in their districts.

Juniors and seniors at Alexander, Trimble, and Federal Hocking are trained to be mentors to the younger students in a program run by Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

The local Executive Director of the group - Andria Airhart - says mentors fill a void in a student's life caused by a single parent situation or a lack of a positive influence.

The program was developed a couple of years ago and recently received $4,100 from an Athens Foundation grant.

Airhart says peer mentoring has been a success but Big Brothers/Big Sisters couldn't do it without the funding support.

The grant covers the cost of supplies and books as well as travel costs for the AmeriCorp member who runs the program.
