Youthbuild program helps at risk teens
(2007-10-29)
(WOUB) - The Youthbuild program comes by its name honestly.

It's about young people involved in construction.

WHAT they build is affordable housing.

WHY they build is a little more complicated.

The main reason is to learn a skill, something the participants badly need.

Shelly Horvath is with the non-profit organization Sojourners...which just recently got a $380,000 federal grant for its Youthbuild program.

Sojourners is based in Vinton County and serves at risk young people from Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky who have sometimes dropped out of school and sometimes been in trouble with the law.

The idea is to educate the kids and provide them with work readiness training.

That way they have a better chance of becoming productive citizens.
