Athens Red Cross helps out
(2007-10-25)
(WOUB) - Thanks to calmer winds, some progress is being made on the front lines of the battle against the southern California wildfires.

But six large fires in San Diego County are still almost unchecked and they threaten more than 8,500 houses.

So there's plenty of work for volunteers from the Athens County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Sandy Shirey is executive director at the Athens chapter...which has already sent one person to help and two others are to ship out today.

Property damage just in San Diego County totals over a billion dollars.

At least 1,500 homes across southern California have been reduced to smoldering ruins.
