Childhood obesity- a growing problem
(WOUB) - Childhood obesity is a huge problem in the United States.

And it's even worse in Appalachia...where poor nutrition and lack of physical activity can cause diabetes, among other health difficulties.

Janalee Stock is school nurse for the Athens City School District...which is taking steps to fight obesity -- literally so with the Walk Across America program.

The idea is to walk and walk and walk until all the miles of all the participating elementary students add up to the distance across the country and back again.

Stock says a second program is "Dance, Dance Revolution", getting kids out of their seats and on to the floor to exercise with a beat.

The programs are being funded by grants from the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation and are also being used in schools in Morgan and Vinton counties.
