Sheriff charged with DUI
(2007-10-15)
(WOUB) - The State Highway Patrol says the
northeast Ohio Columbiana County sheriff was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after a trooper saw him weaving in and out of lanes at 81 mph.

According to the report, after 49-year-old David Smith failed field sobriety tests he identified himself as a sheriff and asked the arresting trooper to let him go because he was running for re-election next year.

The patrol says Smith was driving home from the Buckeye State Sheriff's Association dinner when he was pulled over Thursday night in eastern Ohio's Guernsey County.

Smith was handcuffed and taken to the Cambridge patrol post, where he submitted a urine sample for testing and was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
