Ravenswood plant to close
(2007-10-15)
(WOUB) - The Ravenswood Specialty Services plant will likely close its doors for good early next month.

Thirty four workers were laid off on Friday, in advance of the nylon plant finally closing in about three weeks.

Sam Southall, president of the United Steelworkers local that represents workers at the plant, was one of those who got pink slips.

He said workers thought the company was making a turnaround after some of the 40 people laid off earlier this year returned to work.

The union hopes to get the federal Department of Labor to recognize that workers lost their jobs because of a free trade agreement.

That would allow workers to receive up to two-and-a-half years of unemployment pay and up to $20,000 for retraining.
