Farm Service Agency in Perry County looking to close
(WOUB) -
Farmers in Perry County might have to travel a little more to use the Ohio Farm Service Agency.

The agency is looking to close in Somerset and combine its offices to consolidate operations.

This could put a burden on the farmers who will have drive farther to get to the office.

The Agency helps farmers with many different types of loans and payments, including crop deficiency payments and commodity loans.

The Perry County office employs two technicians and a director who floats between offices.

The State Director for the Farm Service Agency, John Stevenson, says two technicians can't handle the work.

Stevenson says that if offices are combined, the agency can better serve the farmers with more people to help them.

To use the agency, Perry County farmers would have to head to offices in Fairfield, Licking or Muskingum counties.

The proposal has to make a couple stops in Washington for a final okay, including the Secretary of Agriculture.

If approved, the proposal would require a 120 day comment period.
