OU will not pay for false alarms
(2007-09-20)
(WOUB) - Athens Mayor Ric Abel says Ohio University owes the city "thousands" of dollars but a new legal opinion lets the university off the hook.

The money is for penalty fees for false police and fire alarms.

Abel says instead of paying up, the university went to the state attorney general...who says state agencies do not have to obey the law.

Mayor Abel says he will ask Athens City Council to take a second look at the fee ordinance...which was enacted last year in an attempt to reduce the number of false alarms.

Abel says false alarms place an undue burden on both the police and fire departments.

Last year, the fire department went on approximately 800 runs and 100 of them were false alarms...which Abel says are mostly sounded because of malfunctioning alarm systems.
