Veterans Waiting for Medical Care
(2007-09-11)
(WOUB) - An internal investigation at the Department of Veterans Affairs shows that the department repeatedly understated
wait times for injured veterans seeking medical care.

The investigation found that the VA facility in Chillicothe was
tied with the Columbia, South Carolina facility as having the worst
record of scheduling appointments within 30 days.

The review by the VA inspector general's office was released
yesterday.

It examined 700 outpatient appointments for primary and
specialty care scheduled in October 2006 at 10 VA medical centers,
including Chillicothe.

In many serious cases, the veterans were forced to wait more
than 30 days -- something that goes against department policy.
