Ohio Kiwanis clubs reject proposal to waive soldier dues
(2007-08-13)
(WOUB) - Ohio Kiwanis members have rejected a proposal to let clubs statewide suspend the dues of active-duty soldiers.

Officials say Saturday's decision at the state group's annual meeting in Aurora in northeast Ohio had nothing to do with the way Kiwanis members feel about the Iraq war.

Instead, club member Frank Walker says there were technical reasons, including concern over whether a precedent would be set involving the group's dues structures. Walker says there was no malicious intent at all.

State secretary David Whiteman says Kiwanis International made a similar ruling for the same sorts of reasons, including difficulty defining what might qualify as a "combat zone" or a "hostile act" for clubs worldwide.
