Charges dropped against teacher accused of molesting students
(WOUB) - Prosecutors have decided to drop four remaining sexual abuse charges against a former Capital High School teacher who in turn agreed to give up teaching.

Tyrone Keith Persinger was acquitted in March on two out of six counts of sexual abuse by a parent, guardian or custodian. A mistrial was declared on the other four charges because the Kanawha County jury was deadlocked on them.

A second trial was scheduled to begin Monday, but the prosecutor's office filed a motion today asking that the charges be dismissed. The motion states that it's unlikely another jury, reviewing the same evidence, would be able to resolve the matter.

In exchange for having the charges dismissed, Persinger agreed to sign a document stipulating that he will not teach in any school and will allow his teaching license to expire next June. Under the agreement, he won't be allowed to seek the license's reinstatement.

Assistant Prosecutor Don Morris says he spoke with the victims and their families, and none wanted to go through the emotional turmoil of another trial.

Persinger was fired in September of 2005.
