Marietta reaches tentative agreement with Teamsters
(2007-07-30)
(WOUB) - The city of Marietta has reached an agreement with the local Teamsters.

The union threatened to strike unless the city agreed to raise hourly wages by 50 cents each year for the next two.

A cut of insurance premiums was included in the deal.

Secretary of the Teamsters Local 637 John Sheriff says the union's proposal saved Marietta nearly a million dollars.

"We had a Michigan Conference of Teamsters Insurance and the plan rates are just a lot cheaper, said Sheriff. "You're going with a group of 50,000 instead of a group of 187, like they had in Marietta."

Sheriff says the Teamsters were very close to a strike when the city agreed to the deal.

City council will have to vote before accepting the terms.
