Arrests in Athens after Saturday night disturbance
(WOUB) - Athens police arrested several people during a disturbance Saturday night, including one who was charged with rioting.

That person was part of a so-called "Convergence" event that Lt. Randy Gray says involved members of an anarchist group.

Gray says when he first arrived at the intersection of North Court and State Street, a "large" group of people was blocking traffic and trying to tear down signs. They were carrying sticks, rocks and bricks and three of them were twirling flaming objects.

Lt. Gray used pepper spray after he was struck in the back and man-handled.

Off-duty officers were called in and area law enforcement agencies were called for assistance.

The group broke up but not before four others were arrested.

They were charged with disorderly conduct by intoxication and obstructing official business.
