Ohio University is going to lay off 24 maintenance and custodial workers.
(2007-07-26)
(WOUB) - Ohio University is going to lay off 24 maintenance and custodial workers.

Eight other positions that are now vacant are being eliminated.

Union President Dave Logan says this is a big let down because the union thought a contract signed in February would ensure job security.

OU Vice President for Finance and Administration William Decatur says the staff cuts are due to budget problems, two million dollars worth.

Rising health care, utility and wage costs are blamed.

Decatur says the administration is trying to help the affected workers by perhaps moving them to other positions at the university.

Decatur also says fewer than expected employees participated in an early retirement incentive plan, so the savings were not as great as hoped.

And he says OU opted to put extra money into areas with, quote, "significant needs" like the police department and certain administrative positions.
