AEP pays OSHA penalty
(WOUB) - American Electric Power has agreed to pay a $55,000 penalty for safety violations at a power plant in Washington County.

The payment is part of an "informal settlement agreement" with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Last month, OSHA cited AEP for an explosion in January at the Muskingum River Plant at Beverly, and had proposed a fine of $95,000.

A truck driver, Lewis Timmons of Middlebourne, W.Va., died in the explosion. He had been unloading hydrogen into cylinders.

An OSHA report says the area did not have have adequate ventilation and the power company did not have proper safety devices.

The settlement agreement also calls for AEP to correct the violations.
