Schools ready to receive safety funding
(2007-06-26)
(WOUB) - Schools across the state are getting ready to upgrade their safety systems. Funds are set to roll out July First.

The ten million dollars approved in the last legislative session will go toward upgrading security at school entryways.

School Building Authority Director Mark Anthony Manchin says the locks will keep West Virginia students safer. He says concerns from parents have been steadily rising in the wake of deadly school shootings, like those at Virginia Tech and Columbine High School.

52 of West Virginia's 55 counties have submitted their school safety audits to the SBA. The detailed questionnaires asked school administrators to list the number of doors at each school and other safety oriented information.

Next, schools will send proposals listing their needs and the SBA will release funds according to merit.
