Ohio University tries to haul fill dirt to the Ridges
(2007-06-08)
(WOUB) - Athens activist Chad Kister is criticizing Ohio University's negotiations with the Edwards Company to haul fill dirt to The Ridges.

The company suggested moving 250,000 cubic yards of earth to allow for construction of a housing project.

Edwards wants to fill part of the former state mental hospital grounds and build an access road to the part of The Ridges behind the Dairy Barn and Carriage Hill.

Kister says the fill dirt would harm streams and endangered Bobcats he thinks live there.

Kister says The Ridges need protection because it is the only large green space for relaxation within walking distance from the campus and uptown Athens.

But OU Legal Affairs Director John Burns says Kister is wrong about a ban on development of The Ridges and the only question was what type of development.

He says the land use plan of the Ecology Committee is a non binding suggestion.

Burns says nothing is going to happen immediately but the access road would open the area to additional uses in the long run.

Kister says 4,000 students have signed petitions asking that the area be protected.
