University studies trash as it considers composting
(2007-05-29)
(WOUB) - Even the trash is getting studied these days at Ohio University.

Students have been monitoring the amount of waste generated at the school's food court and whether stuff that can be recycled or composted is correctly being separated out.

The food court's plates, napkins, cups and utensils are made of biodegradable materials, and next year the university might stop sending that trash to a landfill but instead turn it into compost for landscaping. With the state's help, OU plans to buy a composting device that could process as much as three tons of waste per day.

But first, students must get into the habit of using the proper bins for throwing things out.
