State funds restoration of historic Marietta towboat
(2007-05-25)
(WOUB) - The Ohio River Museum in Marietta now has the money needed to repair and restore a historic boat and is making plans to start the project this fall.

The Museum just received $876,000 from Ohio's capital budget for the work on the W.P. Snyder, Jr. The Snyder is the last steam-powered towboat of its type and was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1989.

Museum Site Manager Andy Verhoff says the release of funds by the State Controlling Board earlier this week provided a major boost to their fund-raising effort.

"We need to make some major repairs to the boat in order to preserve it," said Verhoff. "That includes replacing and repairing most of the hull. It includes putting a new electrical system on the boat, replacing decking and replacing the paddle wheel."

Verhoff says the fund drive will continue in order to create an endowment to maintain the boat, which will be moved to a dry dock in November or December.

The restoration should be done and the Snyder returned to its spot on the Muskingum River on Memorial Day, 2008.
