Shock, questions remain after officer's death
(2007-05-24)
(WOUB) - David Poling was only 32 and a former Marine who was in good physical shape. So Gallipolis Police Chief Clinton Patterson is having a hard time understanding how Poling could drown in the slow-moving Ohio River.

"We don't know, Dave may have gotten a cramp or something like that and not be able to get back to shore," said Patterson. "Right now, it's a mystery."

Poling, a probation officer, went into the river to try to catch a man who was running away from another officer.

"It is a sudden loss and it's very hard for them right now," Patterson said.

The man who was being pursued is 22-year-old Joseph Harris, who has now been charged with obstructing official business.
