Mason hires 2 new officers in wake of 6 resignations
(2007-05-14)
(WOUB) - The Mason Police Department is back up to four officers, including a new interim chief, after losing the majority of its force last week.

Two new officers were hired Friday at an emergency city council meeting and Sergeant David Woolard was appointed interim chief.

Last week, five of the department's seven officers quit following the resignation of then Chief Derrick Taylor. Mayor Mindy Kearns says she had asked Taylor to resign because of insubordination.

While Kearns has declined to talk about the nature of the insubordination, Taylor says the mayor was upset about his choice of an officer to fill in for him while he was out on medical leave.

He says other issues include a dispute over some cruiser repairs, which he did himself at no labor cost, the purchase of some promotional items for Mason Elementary School and a time card that he admittedly falsified to help out one of his officers.

Taylor says he didn't ask the other officers who resigned to do that and says he's unhappy about the whole situation.
