Outgoing Athens mayor reflects on election loss
(WOUB) - After losing to Paul Wiehl in the Democratic primary for Athens mayor, Ric Abel will be ending his nearly three-decade run in elected office in the city.

Although he is sad that his career in office will come to a close, Abel says he is proud of the many things he was able to accomplish throughout the years. Abel also takes pride in the fact that he has held several different positions during his time of public service.

Abel says he has work to do before leaving office at the end of the year.

"I'm better off having seven-plus months to pack up and go through and get things in order than seven weeks," said Abel.

Abel says whether he's succeeded by Wiehl or one of the other two candidates, they will need to focus on issues pertaining to Ohio University.

"The university has to be a part of the planning of any administration," said Abel. "Saying that may be one of the reasons I'm not there anymore, but I think that's a reality and I think both the candidates need to address that, and I hope that they do."

Abel does not know what he's going to do after he leaves City Hall at the end of the year. However, he says that after being in office for so long, regardless of what he does in the future, it will be a life change that he will have to adjust to.
