OU football scrimmage pays tribute to Merritt, Va. Tech victims
(WOUB) - Fans at Ohio University's annual spring intrasquad football scrimmage Saturday got a glimpse of two different tributes during every play.

The Bobcats placed a Virginia Tech logo on one side of each player's helmet as a show of support in the aftermath of last week's shootings.

The number 26 was also placed on the other side of the helmets to remember fallen soccer player Sarah Merritt. Merritt died last month after falling from a balcony while on spring break in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

Ohio Head Coach Frank Solich made the decision to hold the tributes. He says it was important to recognize the people of Virginia Tech and to remember Merritt.

Sophomore quarterback Josh Febus says having both decals on his helmet reminded him that there are bigger things in life beside football.

"It was such a tragedy to happen, it really puts in perspective where we actually stand in the scheme of things," said Febus. "With Sarah Merritt, it was so unfortunate to hear that and was a big loss to the Bobcat family."

Senior lineback Taj Henley, a native of Richmond, Va., says he knows several people who go to school at Virginia Tech and his thoughts went out to them and the Blacksburg community.

"Our hearts just go out to the whole Virginia Tech family," said Henley.

Ohio University is scheduled to play at Virginia Tech in September. Classes are resuming today in Blacksburg, one week after the massacre.
