Measure would mandate shaken-baby education, tracking
(2007-04-17)
(WOUB) - Ohio lawmakers will consider having the state keep track of the number of infants who die or are hurt from being shaken.

A bill from state Senator Steve Stivers of suburban Columbus also would require that new parents and child care providers be given educational materials telling how dangerous it is to shake a child.

Republican Stivers says his measure would make Ohio a model for the nation.

But child abuse prevention advocates say the proposal could be even stronger. They want parents and others who care for children to receive personal instruction against shaking, not just pamphlets. They're also calling for a campaign of radio and TV ads.
