Middleport sees increase in drug problems
(WOUB) - What's going on in Middleport has many of its citizens concerned. In recent years, the drug trade has increased dramatically inside the Meigs County village.

"Several years ago, you never knew anything besides marijuana around here, but the past several years it seems like everybody's using needles now or doing crack," said Justin Coleman of Middleport. His opinion is supported by police statistics, which show the number of drug cases has tripled in the last five years.

"We're getting hit real hard with the out of town drug influence, everywhere from Detroit to Columbus, Dayton, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Akron, all over," said Middleport Police Chief Bruce Swift. "We're finding people that are coming into town and bringing their drug trade with them."

Swift says drugs cause other crime, too. He says the answer is to get the community involved.

Swift has put together a presentation for local groups which describes the problem and suggests ways to fight back.
