Ohio Public Broadcasting recognizes WOUB Web site, development

(WOUB) - WOUB has been honored with three awards by the Ohio Public Broadcasting Awards. The Ohio Public Broadcasting Awards are sponsored by eTech Ohio, which serves Ohio citizens through educational initiatives and the implementation of new technology. The awards ceremony was held on Friday, March 16, 2007 at the Quest Center in Columbus, Ohio.

The Ohio Public Broadcasting Awards recognized WOUB's Web site www.wiredforbooks.org, in the Public Information category and the Program of the Year category. "Wired for Books" is a Web site created and produced by David Kurz, senior web developer for the WOUB Center for Public Media." Wired for Books" features streaming audio and video presentations of lectures, book and poetry readings, and children's stories from the Center's Web site. The site includes a wide range of content for children and adults, and has more than 1,400 Web pages and more than 1,000 audio and video files. Before being honored by the Ohio Public Broadcasting Awards, "Wired For Books" was cataloged by the Library of Congress, selected by The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) as one of the best online resources for education, and was awarded the RealNetworks Streamers Award in 1999 for the best educational use of streaming media. Wired for Books was also selected as the Best of the Web by the New York Public Library and Google has ranked the site in 84 top-level categories.
WOUB also received an Ohio Public Broadcasting award for On-Air Development. The award recognized the membership campaign efforts of WOUB staff after a change in format in 2004 to NPR (National Public Radio) news and information. Between 2000 and 2005, membership dollars raised increased by 53%. Business underwriting support increased by 34% between these years and direct mail campaigns and a CPB-sponsored major giving initiative have been established to increase gifts to the center.
