EPA monitoring Belmont County pollution site
(WOUB) - The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency says it's taking a look at the progress of a pollution clean-up project at the former Gould Manufacturing Facility located near Lansing in Belmont County.

In 1980 an underground line released solvent at the site and there was further contamination of the soil and ground water from the disposal of solvent and metal sludge.

Five years ago waste material and contaminated soils were excavated and disposed.

The EPA reports that since 2004, a ground water system has removed more than 700 pounds of solvent contaminant.

The cleanup continues and now the EPA is doing a five-year review to determine if the activities protect human health and the environment.

Local residents are invited to comment on the review, which should be completed in September.
