Columbus mayor proposes ID law for scrap metal sellers
(WOUB) - Columbus' mayor wants to force scrap metal dealers to check identification from the sellers.

Frequent thefts of copper wire and other metals are creating a nuisance for the city and Mayor Michael Coleman says requiring scrap yards to get photo ID and fingerprints from sellers would deter criminals.

In Ohio, thieves have stolen catalytic converters from cars for their platinum, copper wiring from air conditioning units and aluminum siding off of homes. Columbus' city council will evaluate the proposal next month, but some officials say it will take a statewide measure to curb the thefts.
