Residents worried about tourism fight mine expansion
(WOUB) - Some southeast Ohio residents object to a proposed expansion of a sand and gravel strip mine, believing it could hurt tourism by encroaching on the Hocking River.

They've formed a group called Concerned Citizens of Hocking Hills and created a Web site to list their objections. They also have gathered about 100 signatures on petitions against the expansion.

Mar Zane Materials has asked the state for permission to expand its mine at Enterprise in Hocking County from four acres to 186 acres.

The company's application is pending before the state's Division of Mineral Resources Management, which says it must determine how the river would be protected in a mining expansion. A public meeting about the company's application also is planned.
