Columbus officials say red-light cameras reduced crashes in '06
(2007-02-27)
(WOUB) - Critics say the traffic cameras used to catch people running red lights in several Ohio cities are little more than moneymaking traps.

But officials in Columbus claim new numbers show its red light camera program is improving safety.

The city's deputy safety director says at intersections with the cameras, accidents fell 47 percent last year. The number of drivers going through red lights declined by almost 63 percent.

Columbus has been using the technology in eight locations and planned to add a ninth intersection to the list today. Eventually, 20 red light cameras will be watching over the city's streets.
