Residents return to homes after Saturday's explosion
(WOUB) - The Nelsonville Fire Department is asking the City Council to set aside $25,000 for the inspections and repairs to the sewer system.

But, a fire department spokesman says the city won't know how much the repairs will cost until the inspection is complete.

Authorities say gas that leaked from an overturned vehicle Saturday night sparked an explosion in the storm sewer system, damaging five homes.

It's unclear what ignited the gas.

Authorities say they evacuated about 60 homes, and about 20 people spent the night at an emergency shelter set up at nearby Hocking College.

All but one elderly woman has been allowed back to home.

In the meantime, authorities say she is staying with family.
