Death penalty supporters, opponents write Ohio governor's office
(2007-02-18)
(WOUB) - In one of the nation's busiest death penalty states, letters to Governor Strickland are running almost five to one in favor of ending capital punishment or temporarily stopping it to study the system.

Strickland, a death penalty supporter, delayed the executions of three inmates shortly after taking office. He's also received 125 letters or e-mails from death penalty opponents, compared with 27 urging the Governor to retain the death penalty.

Strickland says he called for the delays to have enough time to review case files, but both proponents and critics of the death penalty viewed the delays as the first step toward instituting a moratorium.

Strickland says such suppositions are reading between the lines.
