Lawrence Co. sewer district ready for upgrades
(WOUB) - The Union-Rome Sewer District is getting ready to do what the Ohio Environmental Protect Agency has been telling the district to do -- make a multi-million dollar upgrade to its treatment plant.

On Wednesday, the Lawrence County district will begin looking for a contractor for the project.

Union-Rome Manager Tim Porter says the current facility is old and sometimes pollutes when it does not do a good job treating waste. Porter says the new facility will provide twice as much capacity to serve district customers.

Porter estimates the cost of the proposed treatment plant is $18 million and the district will need to borrow money from the EPA to pay for it.

Efforts to obtain grant funds were unsuccessful. Construction bids are to be opened on March 29.
