Group pushes ballot initiative to change school funding
(2007-01-20)
(WOUB) - Ohio University's dean of education says a proposed ballot intiative dealing with changing Ohio's school funding system is a step in the right direction.

The group, Getting it Right for Ohio's Future, submitted a proposal for ballot initiative this week to switch most of the financial burden from property taxes to state funding.

Dean of Education Renee Middleton says it will provide new, and better opportunities for students in certain demographics.

Some detractors say this will just become a massive money grab that will cost the state hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

But, Jim Betts, spokesman for the Getting it Right for Ohio's Future campaign, says the initiative will provide objectivity in school funding through the work of the State Board of Education.

The proposal needs the support of more than 400,000 petitioners to be placed on the November ballot.
