Authorities impressed with teen joy rider's train know-how
(WOUB) - Authorities say one of the boys accused of taking a locomotive on a joy ride in southeast Ohio earlier this week knew his trains.

Nelsonville Police Chief David Redecker says 16 year old Matthew Burks had grown up around trains and had worked in a rail yard.

The president of the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway says the boy knew things it takes his train operators years to learn.

Police say Burks and 13 year old Zachary Walden broke out of a local detention home and took one of the passenger railway's engines on a 12 mile trip early Tuesday morning. The pair are charged with juvenile counts of burglary, theft and escape.

A union says the episode shows that Ohio lawmakers need to pass rail security legislation.
