Chief says building where fire killed 7 has no sprinklers
(WOUB) - Huntington fire officials say a five-story apartment building where a weekend blaze killed at least eight people had no sprinkler system.

Fire Chief Greg Fuller says sprinklers aren't mandated by state fire code. However, smoke alarms are. Fuller says the Huntington Fire Department is checking whether the circa-1924 building was in compliance.

Firefighters found three bodies Saturday and four more Sunday, all on the top story. Cabell Huntington Hospital spokeswoman Kathy Cosco says another person died at the hospital and two others remain in serious condition.

Fire officials identified seven victims as 68-year-old Mary Biss; Beatrice Yancy; seven-year-old Seth Justas and his mother, Ann Saleh; and three siblings -- 19-year-old Ben Lucas, 17-year-old Angel Lucas and 14-year-old Quentin Lucas.

The name of the eighth victim, a male, hasn't been released.

City Fire Marshal David Bias says it could take days to identify the cause of the fire.
