Hitchhiker promotes his niceness to get rides
(2007-01-13)
(WOUB) - A Dayton man figures he's hitchhiked more than 16,000 miles through 24 states.

Sam Douthwaite says he thumbs rides based on his own curiosity. He also likes to gather stories about people and their lives.

He's aware that some drivers may be wary of picking up hitchhikers so he carries a sign fashioned from a cardboard box that says, "I'm Nice."

Hitchhiking is legal but is prohibited in certain areas, such as near prisons.

Lieutenant David Allwine of the State Highway Patrol in Athens, Ohio, says both drivers and pedestrians should consider the potential risks involved with hitchhiking.

The driver and the hitchhiker don't know each other, and he says people with criminal backgrounds often live on the fringe and rely on hitchhiking to get around.
