Ohio gas companies to test homes, business for leaks
(2007-01-07)
(WOUB) - Ohio's local natural gas distribution companies are being asked to immediately begin checking lines to homes and businesses out of concerns that some lines may be susceptible to leaks.

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, in a letter Tuesday, asked Ohio's natural-gas utilities to check for leaks because of safety concerns.

The focus of the tests is a fixture called a riser, which connects a building's gas meter to the company-owned pipes that deliver the gas. The PUCO staff recommends a survey of all risers after testing revealed that they had the potential to leak.

Problems with the connecting pipes were blamed for the death of a Cincinnati resident and nearly $1 million in damage in Ohio this decade. The PUCO says if the pipes are not properly installed, they can blow full gas pressure against a structure and cause significant damage.
