Nelsonville US 33 bypass delayed
(2007-01-03)
(WOUB) - The delay of the Nelsonville US 33 bypass doesn't have everyone in our region down in the dumps.

A couple of weeks ago the Ohio Department of Transportation announced that the bypass project would be delayed until 2015 citing financial concerns.

The decision to delay was one that devastated many of the region's business people and economic developers.. Who said the bypass is needed to improve the area's economy.

But some people in Nelsonville are welcoming the news.

Nelsonville City Councilman Charlie Smith says the city put together a comprehensive plan to prepare for the construction, and now that there is a delay, more thought can be put into improving the plan.

An ODOT official says inflation is making the construction cost for the project too high for the state to afford right now. The Nelsonville project is a lower priority than some other road projects around the state.

Smith says the city will use the time to research the effects of bypassing on other communities, such as Lancaster.

The delay pushes the completion date back four years.

The Nelsonville bypass is the last piece needed to connect southeastern ohio to Columbus with a four lane highway.
