Fenton celebrates 100 years of glassmaking
(WOUB) - Fenton Art Glass is celebrating a milestone, its 100th anniversary of glassmaking.

In January of 1907, the family-owned business began producing glassware in Williamstown.

The company has survived the economic struggles that have wiped out many of the glass factories that once flourished in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio. It has grown into an internationally known business that is one of the largest employers in Wood County.

Fenton is managed by members of the fourth generation of the Fenton family and employs about 500 workers.

Fenton began as a glass decorating company in 1905 in Martins Ferry, Ohio, before brothers Frank L and John Fenton discovered the benefits of producing glass for themselves and decided to build an independent glass operation in Williamstown.

The company plans to celebrate its 100th anniversary of production August Third through the Fifth with demonstrations, custom decorating by Fenton artists and special tours.

Fenton produces vases and pitchers, bells and bowls and figurines.

Each year, up to 40,000 people tour the plant.
