Space, Wilson set to join Congress
(2007-01-02)
(WOUB) - Two new congressmen from southeast Ohio are among the Democrats who are preparing to take control of Capitol Hill this week.

Zack Space represents the 6th District and Charlie Wilson the 18th.

Space takes the seat formerly held by disgraced Republican congressman Bob Ney. Wilson slides into the one vacated by Ted Strickland when he run successfully for governor. Space and Wilson will be sworn in on Thursday.

Steubenville's Mike Taylor will make the trip to Washington for the festivities.

Taylor is a vice-president of the Ohio Association of Professional Firefighters Union, which endorsed Wilson in the election.

"It's not something you get to do everyday," said Taylor. "I'm just kind of going for the experience. A bunch of friends are going and we just get to share the day with Charlie and enjoy the fact that he pulled off something unprecedented in winning this election."

St. Clairsville High School junior Alexis Cain is going, too. She volunteered on Wilson's campaign with her aunt.

Cain says she wants to major in political science in college and hopes to learn as much as she can from this experience.

"I'm just trying to absorb as much as I can about how things work and how things run, so who knows, maybe I'll be there swearing in someday," said Cain. "That would be nice."

The official swearing-in is at noon on Thursday, with a ceremonial one later in the day.
