Athens police alert procedure
(WOUB) - A crime occurs and the call goes out -- if you see the bad guy, grab the telephone and inform the police department.

The police lines are "flooded" as a result, and that's a good thing, right?

Not so much.

Athens Police Captain Tom Pyle says using a system for automatically calling people, about two-thousand calls were made yesterday to an area within a half mile radius of the crime, an armed robbery of a Court Street store.

Apparently that did not provide police with any help, but Pyle says it did raise a lot of questions because people are not familiar with the alert procedure.

The system is called Code Red because that's the name of the company that operates it for Athens County.
